Please join Clara Zelenak and Robert Wojkowski, through the West Elgin Community Health Centre, in the third of the MINDFULNESS AND STRESS-RELIEF series – “SELF-COMPASSION.” Click HERE for advertisement poster.
Our expectations of what Christmas and similar holidays “should” be are often unrealistic, leaving us feeling unfulfilled, empty and sad. Family strife, loss, loneliness, anxiety, are brought into sharp focus. Fixating on the “wrongs” in our lives instead of the “rights” produces feelings of unworthiness and stress. We often blame ourselves – guilt and shame blocking our ability to experience self-compassion.
Caring for yourself brings you into the present moment which is real. Judging yourself takes you out of the present moment by remembering old hurts, traumas and negative experiences from the past.
Identifying with certain mind states: “I’m stupid. I’m a failure. I hate myself.”, builds onto the story of our lives. We start to live that story. But these are just thoughts. They are past. They are no longer reality.
When self-talk is riddled with negative self-judgment, gently remind yourself, “My thoughts, feelings and memories don’t define ME. My true self renews itself in every moment. I am constantly evolving and growing.”
Overcoming self-judgment is the first step in bringing self-compassion into your life. It opens a path to recognizing, “I am loving and loveable. I am worthy.”
With the help of mindfulness meditation, the stress-producing old conditioning of the past is diminished. It loses its power over your life.
